EXID is a South Korean girl group under Banana Culture Entertainment and was formed in 2012. EXID stands for “Exceed in Dreaming”

AB Entertainment and producer Shinsadong Tiger scouted many trainees from JYP Entertainment with the hope of creating a new girl group. The first member they recruited was Jung Yu Ji, when the JYP girl group she was in failed to debut. Yu Ji then went on to contact fellow trainee mates Hani, Park Jeong-hwa, and Na Hae-ryung to audition. All three were accepted into the agency. The next member added to the group was underground rapper and song writer LE, who was discovered by Shinsadong Tiger. The last member added to the group was already a trainee of the company, Kang Hye-yeon (formerly known as Dami).

EXID made their debut on February 16, 2012 with the single “Whoz that Girl”.

Shortly after their debut, AB Entertainment released a statement  announcing the departure of Jung Yu Ji, Na Hae-ryung, and Kang Hye-yeon. The three went on to debut in girl group Bestie.

Around July 31, 2012, there was an announcement that EXID’s vocal coach and former 2NB member, Solji would join the group along with Hyelin, a trainee who was originally considered for EXID’s lineup before she was dropped.

EXID went on to part ways with AB Entertainment and signed an exclusive contract with Banana Culture.

On August 27, 2014, EXID released the single “Up and Down” and did terribly on the charts. It failed to get on Gaon’s top 100 chart. The song was revived when a fancam of Hani performing “Up and Down” was uploaded by Youtube user Pharkil.

Because of the fancam, the song slowly gained popularity and ended up topping the Gaon charts. EXID even won their first award since their debut.

On December 21, 2016, Solji was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism and halted all her activities, while the other four continued on. Solji returned to the group for the recording process of the album “Full Moon” but was absent from promotions and recording of the music video. September 7, 2018, marked the formal return of Solji.

Early May of 2019, Hani and Jeonghwa decided not to renew their contracts with Banana Culture and EXID will enter an indefinite hiatus to focus on individual activities. The members of EXID claim that this does not mean EXID will disband.
